Almost 3 years have passed since the world was turned upside down. Given the ultimatum “go remote or die”, organizations became virtual overnight, and a new world of work was born.

30 months later, organizations look and feel lost in this new world – still debating the merits of remote work, leasing offices that go unused and investing in employee tools, training and perks that don’t move the needle.

Organizations are operating in this new world but far from thriving in it. And until now, they’ve been shielded by the consequences of their inaction. However, harsh economic conditions are finally pulling back the curtain, and the view isn’t pretty.

Firms must now find ways to quickly reduce burn and increase performance, or die. This is no mean feat, but it’s even more daunting considering how isolated, burnt out, and disengaged employees are today. Mass layoffs don’t help, and are, at best, a temporary solution to the existential problems plaguing the modern workplace.

What happens when the dust settles? How do firms thrive in the new world of work?

This is the $1T question, and we believe we have the answer.

To thrive in this new world, firms must be able to operate primarily virtually but “materialize physically on command”, quickly assembling anywhere across the globe in a fashion that drives creativity, collaboration and culture.

Our thesis is shared by Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz of a16z, founders of the world’s premiere venture capital firm.

In the old world, a16z were a single office firm. Now, their headquarters are in the cloud.

a16z are taking money they would have spent on real estate and instead spending it on travel and off-sites, which they host for employees every 6-8 weeks. Marc says this is where real bonding can happen, over hikes, long dinners, and parties on the beach. It charges the firm up with the social bonding it needs to thrive remotely. When the team starts to feel isolated and frayed, it brings everybody back together to reignite that unique sense of community and group cohesion.

Sounds great, right? The problem is very few businesses can do this today, and even fewer can do it consistently well or sustainably.

But we’ve found it’s not for lack of appetite. In fact, firms want to adopt a new operating model (in spirit) but lack the infrastructure, expertise, and resources to execute (in practice) – traditional event-community functions are expensive, coordination overhead is through the roof, and workplace tools simply aren’t enough to fulfil the needs of the modern-day workforce.
